Filter Total Balance Values on Google Sheets by Hashtag.
Introducing Balance Totals filtered by hashtag
We’re excited to announce a powerful enhancement to the Bkper Add-on for Google Sheets that brings hashtag filtering capabilities to the BKPER_BALANCES_TOTAL
function. This new feature enables dynamic financial analysis by allowing you to filter balance totals based on a Group and a hashtag or an Account and a hashtag, opening up new possibilities for managerial accounting and cost analysis.
How It Works
The enhanced function now supports hashtag filtering in the query parameter:
The Bkper formula on Google Sheets
=BKPER_BALANCES_TOTAL(agtzfmJrcGVyLWhyZHITCxIGTGVkZ2VyGICAwMWc48ELDA, 1, “group:’COGS’ #projectB on:2025”, FALSE, FALSE, TRUE)
This formula dynamically calculates the total balance values for transactions that match both the specified Group (or Account) and the hashtag criteria. In the example above, it returns the COGS balance specifically for #projectB transactions in the year 2025.
Deitailed explanation of the Bkper Balances Total Function
Key Benefits
Simplified Chart of Accounts: Instead of creating separate accounts for each project or dimension (like Cost_ProjectA, Cost_ProjectB), you can maintain a single cost account and use hashtags to differentiate transactions by project, department, or any other relevant category.
Enhanced Managerial Accounting: This feature enables more sophisticated cost accounting and financial analysis without the complexity of maintaining redundant account structures. Users can now easily track margins, costs, and revenues across multiple dimensions using a cleaner, more maintainable setup.
Dynamic Analysis: The hashtag filtering works seamlessly with existing Bkper functionality, allowing for real-time calculations that adapt as new transactions are added with relevant hashtags.
Technical Details
The feature processes up to 3,000 transactions per query, making it suitable for most small to medium-sized business analysis needs. For detailed implementation guidance and additional examples, refer to our Fetch Balance Values from Bkper help article.
This enhancement represents our continued commitment to making your financial data more accessible and actionable for users who rely on Google Sheets for their analysis and reporting workflows.
